I have always believed that true wellness depends on forging a strong relationship between mind, body, spirit, and community. From the time of my childhood as a competitive gymnast, I learned that peak athletic performance required not only dedicated practice, but also attention to nutrition and mental wellness. In the Human Ecology College at Cornell University I majored in Biology and Society through which I was able to study both the biological and social sciences with an emphasis on nutrition while competing as a student athlete. After medical school, I chose to specialize in family medicine because of my desire to care for people across all stages of life and create long-term relationships with intergenerational families. I enjoyed a successful practice in rural Pennsylvania for a decade.
I then sustained a brain injury and was unable to return to my busy family practice. During my recovery, I again turned to nutrition to aid my healing delving further into alternative and integrative approaches and remedies. I was introduced to mediation through a Jon Kabat-Zinn Mindful Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course, developed a daily mediation and yoga practice, studied herbal therapies, and read all I could about non-pharmacological treatments for cognitive and mental health.
I was surprised and saddened to learn that many of the medications I had been trained to prescribe while in medical school did not actually have robust evidence for success and safety for the typical patient. I realized that I could best heal myself and serve others with an approach that combined alternative and conventional modalities. Therefore, I completed a two-year Integrative Medicine fellowship at the University of Arizona, training under the guidance of esteemed Drs. Andrew Weil and Tierarona Low Dog, and became board certified in Integrative Medicine. Since 2018, I have participated in research on access to treatment for Pediatric Acute-Onset Syndrome (PANS) / Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS), with publication of a peer reviewed journal article in 2021. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34618516/
In 2023 I completed an additional Fellowship in Integrative Psychiatry with James Greenblatt, MD, pediatric psychiatrist, to further my knowledge of mental health interventions through nutritional and metabolic approaches.
Through a volunteer lecture series I teach people in my community about Integrative Medicine and have spoken to both government agencies and community groups. Integrative medicine addresses the unique characteristics of each individual and strives to identify root causes rather than just treat symptoms. I have advocated for evidence-based care without the use of psychotropic drugs and seek to educate on the perils of psychiatric drugs for children. I have taught groups about alternative and wholistic approaches to wellness - seeking the root causes for anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, and OCD. I continue advocacy for PANS/ PANDAS and other autoimmune, metabolic, and nutritional etiologies of emotional disruption. Raising awareness regarding healing through nutrition, combating systemic inflammation, and the significance of gastrointestinal integrity to whole body healing is my passion.
I offer consultations to both patients and their physicians to integrate wholistic healing alongside conventional medical care.
I continue to live my life with an aim of wholeness. I am inspired and grounded by my daily gratitude practice, meditation and yoga and teach community yoga classes a couple times a week. I also enjoy hiking with our dog, spending time with my three children and husband, watching movies, and cooking creative whole-food based meals. I have a lifetime love of learning and you can always find me reading and further educating myself on medical topics.
I am grateful to be able to provide care via telehealth to all people in Pennsylvania and in-person care to people from other states.
